WiMAX Development in Asia October 27 - November 2

- China's ZTE and Mauritania's Chinguitel, a unit under ETG (Expresso Telecom Group), have reached an exclusive agreement, whereby ZTE will help the telecom carrier set up Mauritania's first commercial mobile WiMAX network, according to a TMCNet report on October 27. As per the contract, ZTE will provide core network equipment, wireless access devices, and various indoor and outdoor terminals for the 2.5GHz network.

- During his stay in Taiwan, Intel CEO Paul Otellini announced on October 30 that Intel will invest NT$386 million (US$11.71 million; US$1=NT$32.95) in Vmax Telecom, a Taiwanese operator holding a license for operating WiMAX services in northern Taiwan, according to Taiwan's Economic Daily News. Vmax plans to launch its WiMAX service in the first half of 2009.

It is also reported that Intel plans to seek further opportunities for investing in other Taiwanese WiMAX operators, application vendors, and data communications equipment makers with innovation capabilities.
